Tributes are pouring in for "a fine young footballer and super person" who sadly passed away at just 23 years of age.
Roy Butler, from Waterford city, is being remembered as "a lovely young man" whose death has led to "devastation" in his local and sporting communities.
The talented sportsman, who died after a short illness on Tuesday, enjoyed huge success as a football player with Villa FC and Waterford United.
His sporting prowess on the field began when he first captained St Stephens NS before moving on to De La Salle where he starred "on every school team" they had from 1st year to 6th year.
Roy featured "on every Waterford schoolboy league development squad and Kennedy cup" and at Under 15 then he was selected for Waterford FAI's Centre of Excellence programme.
After a trip to play Reading in the UK, he was selected on the Munster Schools Interpros squad and represented Munster "with the huge passion and dedication he had in all his football teams", according to Waterford FAI.
The people of Waterford Ireland are devastated to learn that a local hero @WaterfordFCie captain Roy Butler died on Monday of a massive brain bleed 3 days after getting the @JanssenUS J&J vax. He was a player, coach, mentor, beloved by friends and family. Media silent re vax. RIP pic.twitter.com/IbgkowdlUy
