On the 1 January this year Prime Minister Scott Morrison changed the words of our National Anthem from "for we are young and free" to "for we are one and free".
But are we one? Are we free?
Everyday I open emails and messages from so many of you in dire situations, at rock bottom. My heart is broken as I read the extent of suffering and see the division and discrimination in my community.
I would argue there has never been a more divided time in our Nation’s history.
Premiers are divided against the Commonwealth, states are divided against states, NSW is divided into greater Sydney and the regions, Sydney is split in half with western & south-western Sydney pitted against the rest of the city. On 11 October we will be divided on medical status between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Families will have to ask the question to their brothers, sisters, kids and neighbours "are you double jabbed?".
A hidden virus that has seeped into us all seems to be fear. And I mean this for all sides of the debate. Those who fear dying from COVID, those who fear adverse reactions from the jab, those who fear lockdowns, never seeing their loved ones again. Those who fear holding their job, or keeping their business afloat.
If fear was a political party, it would be leading 10 to 1 in all the polls.
Out of a place of fear we attack others who hold differing views to our own. Out of a place of fear we lash out with words of hatred and death. Out of a place of fear we hurt our loved ones, our neighbours, and people we might never ever meet.
Growing up I was taught that "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out all fear" (1 John 4:18)
There is no fear in love.
Whatever your situation is at the moment. Whoever you are, However you are feeling. Know this as you go into the weekend. Fear is the hidden virus. It won’t change your situation. It won’t help make the best decisions for you and your family. It won’t help you speak the truth in love to those around you. Fear will only create further division and make things worse.
If we are ever to be a nation that is truly one and free, we must not let fear fuelled by political parties, media, or whoever else, divide us.
There is so much out of control at the moment, but we have a choice to choose love, not fear.
Let's look at each other as we should: human beings, all created equal yet unique. Not defined by medical status. Not defined by our opinions. Not defined by our postcode.
We are Australian’s. We get to decide if we will be one. Let’s choose to be one. And in choosing love, not fear, we will be free.
